#2 Minnesota Women’s Hockey wins Game 2, splits series against #3 Ohio State

Minnesota’s No. 2 looked like two different teams in the first and second periods.

In the first, the Ohio State No. 3 made his way with the Gophers, scoring a goal off Paetyn Levis’ stick and controlling the action. The Buckeyes led, 1-0, and outscored the opposition, 12-3.

But in the second, the Gophers came out on fire, scoring four goals before halftime of the period en route to a 5-3 win and a weekend split streak.

It started less than three minutes into the period when Minnesota’s Maggie Nicholson’s shot from the blue line found its way through a plethora of players and into the back of the net. It was his first college goal. Less than two minutes later, Taylor Heise scored one through OSU goaltender Amanda Thiele to give the Gophers a 2-1 lead.

Madeline Wethington continued Gopher’s goalscoring trend and passed Thiele from the high position to give her team a 3-1 lead. Then it was Heise on a 2-on-1 to make it 4-1. For Heise, her two-goal day took her to 20 this season, which is a career high. She also leads the nation in points with 46.

But Ohio State didn’t fall apart without a fight.

About six minutes into the Final 20, OSU defender Sophie Jaques completed a 4-on-2 to cut the lead to 4-2. Then it was Liz Schepers who shot Minnesota defenseman Emily Brown and goaltender Makayla Pahl to cut the lead to 4-3.

The comeback was thwarted, however, when Minnesota’s Audrey Wethington netted an empty net to secure the 5-3 win.

Pahl finished his day with 32 saves on 35 shots. Thiele responded by stopping 23 of 27 shots.

With the win, Minnesota shares that massive streak with Ohio State after losing in overtime Friday night, 2-1.
