South Africa will face Bangladesh for a series of three ODI matches and two Tests in March and April.
Former Indian striker Aakash Chopra believes South African players will have a tough decision to make between IPL 2022 and the next home series against Bangladesh, which will take place in March and April. South Africa are set to face Bangladesh for a three-game ODI series from March 18. ODI matches will end on March 23 and will be followed by two Tests from March 31. The second test begins on April 8 and with the quarantine, South African players would miss games at the start of the IPL.
Notably, Cricket South Africa allowed players to decide whether to participate in the IPL or rather play the Bangladesh series. IPL 2022 starts match 26 with the opening encounter between Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders. Bangladesh’s Shakib Al Hasan has already declared his unavailability for this IPL season despite being named in the mega auction, and he didn’t win a contract this year afterwards.
Extremely necessary for Gujarat Titans to play David Miller: Aakash Chopra
Chopra explained that the South African player’s decision to choose between the IPL and the country could test his loyalty and pointed to the Bangladesh Series dates which will collide with the start of the IPL. Quinton de Kock who will only play ODIs, will be available for Lucknow Super Giants after a three-day quarantine and there will be chances for him to miss at least two to three games.
“South Africa said they will tell the players they have a choice, let’s test your loyalty to the nation. Very difficult question to address as the ODI series will start on March 18, the IPL starts on March 26 and there’s a three-day quarantine before that. The three ODIs are March 18, 20 and 23. Quinton de Kock is an important member here, so he might not be available for Game 1. Lucknow Super Giants – think- y, unless he decides to miss those ODIs,” Aakash Chopra said on his Youtube channel.
Chopra added that David Miller’s availability will be a huge concern for the Gujarat Titans who have a lot of holes in their roster and noted South African Test players who may be missing out. Delhi Capitals and Sunrisers Hyderabad will both miss four players while Punjab Kings could miss Kagiso Rabada which has a big role to play.
“David Miller is also part of the ODI squad – he is badly needed for Gujarat Titans to play him but he might not be available initially. The problems increase after that there are two test matches – the first starts on March 31 and the second ends on April 12. This means Anrich Nortje, Kagiso Rabada, Marco Jansen, Lungi Ngidi, Rassie van der Dussen, Aiden Markram – all of them are part of the IPL but will probably not be not available at the start if they choose to play the Test matches,” he added.
