As the Burlington Discover Jazz Festival returns for the first time since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, many bands are also featured. “Oof, was the transition tough last year,” said Jacob Deva Racusin, who is starting saxophone with High Summer. He and his band mates have been isolated like everyone else for much of the past year, meaning that the band’s typical “jam sessions” were virtually impossible for a while. “I can speak for myself – it’s the longest time of my life that I haven’t played music,” said Deva Racusin. Members of High Summer tried to practice on Zoom, the Internet video conferencing service, with little success. “The process of making music on Zoom just wasn’t happening,” said Deva Racusin. “It just wasn’t the right format, it’s just not the way we play.” Now they don’t have to. “I can speak [for] myself personally – this is the longest period of my life that I have gone without playing music, ”said Deva Racusin.
