In the upcoming horror comic Human Remains, there’s a new breed of monster hunters – and they find us through our strongest emotions, good or bad. Strong love, strong hatred, strong fear – that’s quite an appetizer for these new terrors.

Series co-creator / writer Peter Milligan made up this story during the pandemic, but as he explains, Human Remains is not as influenced by the pandemic as it is by the safety precautions taken in light of it. this.

“London England, last summer. It was during the first lockdown and my wife and I were walking through Kenwood Park, North London, enjoying the only outdoor exercise we were allowed per day. looked at the people around me, all keeping their distance from each other, all – at least anyone who had had common sense – somewhat suspicious, ”says Milligan.

“I was struck by the strangeness of it all. And I thought of all the things that were recently so natural that we couldn’t do any more. All these everyday human things.

“It seemed that the virus was robbing us of some of the essential qualities of what it was to be human,” the writer continues. “A thought struck me, how can you get rid of what it is to be human… before you stop being human?”

Set up as a sort of quiet place but replacing sound with emotion like the way monsters hunt, Human Remains imagines a world where you shouldn’t laugh, you shouldn’t cry, and you shouldn’t love – not if you want it to survive, that is.

“Human Remains is about love, really,” said series co-creator and writer Sally Cantirino. “It’s about mistakes, bad decisions and both intentional and unintentional damage. It’s about the things we do because we love people – our lovers, our families, our communities – even people. who don’t love us back. ”

In the center are two lovers, Dax and Bisa. They are deeply in love, but in this world where alien monsters pick up your scent when you have a serious emotion, they are forced to push their feelings inside.

Milligan and Cantirino both have a track record for horror, from his Enigma and Hellblazer races to his works, I Walk with Monsters and The Final Girls. They are joined by colorist Dearbhla Kelly, designer Tim Daniel and variant cover artist Joshua Hixson.

Human Remains # 1 goes on sale September 22.
