It was quick … Just days after we learned that Warner Bros. had reached the critical phase of screen testing, we now know that In the heights‘Leslie Grace was cast as Barbara Gordon / Batgirl in the film to introduce the character.
Bad boys for life filmmakers Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah are on board to direct from a script by Birds of prey writer Christina Hodson (who deciphered the concept and story where previously attached Joss Whedon couldn’t).
Batgirl, created by producer William Dozier, publisher Julius Schwartz, writer Gardner Fox and artist Carmine Infantino, made her comic book debut as Betty Kane 50 years ago and remains a staple of DC Comics. But by far the best-known incarnation is Barbara Gordon, daughter of Gotham City Police Commissioner Jim Gordon, who has gone through quite a character arc. When Barbara was left paralyzed by the Joker in Alan Moore’s flagship graphic novel The murderous joke, other crime fighters such as The Huntress and Orphan took over from Batgirl, while Gordon became Oracle, who aided Batman on his adventures. The comic book company has since restored the trauma and Gordon has reappeared as his heroic alter ego.
Grace herself confirmed the news with an enthusiastic tweet …
Zoey Deutch, Haley Lu Richardson and Isabela Merced were among the other actors vying for the role, but Grace is now going to slip into the hood.
Right now the film is (in the US at least) targeted for its streaming debut on HBO Max, so we’ll wait and see if Warner Bros. offers a VOD deal or UK film debut.
