We haven’t seen what the new PS5 VR headset, the PSVR 2, looks like yet. But with its orb-style controllers, we’re starting to get a feel for what Sony has in store in terms of offering. software and games for PlayStation VR 2.
Revealed in an investor catch-up document, Sony discusses “new growth vectors,” with its upcoming VR hardware accessory taking pride of place in a related slideshow. In an area that talks about the “new levels of immersion” that the PSVR 2 will offer, he says the headset will offer gamers “unique experiences that are synonymous with PlayStation.”
Elsewhere, the document reiterates what we already know about the PSVR 2 – including its single-cable connection to the PS5 console, and the fact that its wireless motion controllers will exhibit haptic feedback similar to the gamepad. DualSense PS5.
But there are some things that can certainly be deduced from what Sony is exhibiting here. “Unique” can almost certainly be read as “exclusive,” meaning PSVR 2 players will be entitled to titles that their fellow Oculus Quest 2 and Steam VR will miss. As for “Synonymous PlayStation Experiences,” that suggests titles that draw on Sony’s catalog of exclusive franchises – such as, but not limited to, Horizon Forbidden West and The Last of Us.
A solid strategy
Focusing on exclusives makes a lot of sense and aligns with Sony’s existing PS5 strategy.
When the original PlayStation VR launched, the format was new. Gamers and developers alike found their marks with VR and were ready to try any new idea. Likewise, some developers may have been reluctant to offer their cash cow franchises in an untested format, and potentially sully the brand.
But a few years later, with VR games well established and the last console war for Sony more dependent than ever on exclusive titles, familiar, big-price franchises will be important for PSVR 2. Support for VR is a key factor. A key differentiator for Sony’s console from its rival Xbox Series X, and the ability to attach recognizable blockbuster exclusives to the platform will set it apart from the third-party Oculus VR catalog.
