Save yourself!: Summary of the plot

There is no school like old school 8-bit graphics.

With curiosity, Save yourself! does not feature magical girls as the main characters. Instead, the main character is a girl named Gigi. Gigi is just your average, ordinary, introverted everyday gamer. She rarely ventures outside, and even then only at the behest and bribery of a close friend. Except that that day, Gigi meets the woman of his dreams, who quickly runs away before Gigi can even get a name.

Fortunately, Gigi is lucky enough to meet her again in Save yourself!. Unfortunately, it was when she was caught in a crossfire between the Magical Girls and a pair of monsters after taking on one of her friends who decided to try out spectator mode at close range for the fight. . Even more sadly, Gigi witnesses one of the Magical Girls murdering a random civilian. And now Gigi becomes an embarrassing witness that the Magical Girls must silence. Fortunately, one of the monsters (something resembling a pink dragon) protects Gigi and even turns out to be Gigi’s dream woman. Except that this effort to protect Gigi also costs the Lady of the Pink Dragon. Gigi ends up having to protect her in turn in the form of giving her energy via a kiss, which of course causes her to pass out in embarrassment. Certainly yes Negima vibrations of that.

So Gigi wakes up in her own bed in her own house. She hears voices downstairs, thinks it’s her brother, and goes downstairs, only to find the woman of her dreams (whose name turns out to be Mia) having a pleasant conversation with a shark monster hologram. Said monster shark actually reveals that they both come from what is called the Cosmic Federation and that their base is at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean. Oh, and the shark monster wants Gigi and her brother to bring Mia there so she can receive medical treatment. And that’s where Save yourself! # 1 ends.

Save yourself!: Good

Yuri automatically makes it good.

Yes I believe the yuri in Save yourself! automatically gives him points in my favor. As a fan of yuri, I more than agree with that. I really, really want to see where Gigi and Mia’s relationship goes in future issues of this comic. Looks like they could be a cute couple.

In fact, the whole frame of Save yourself! is one of the biggest hooks in this comic. A group of magical girls appear out of nowhere and save the world, but they are hiding a very dark secret, and they certainly don’t have the best interests of mankind in mind. It reminds me a bit of a horror-free version of the manga Magic girl apocalypse. There are also certainly signs of a deeper plot at work here between Mia and the Magical Girls.

The work of art for Save yourself! # 1 is also very easy on the eyes. It is well drawn and has a nice warm color tone. Even during the battle scene, the colors remained predominantly vivid, only darkening slightly to indicate the change in tone. Plus, Mia’s dragon form is cute, so that’s another plus for me.

Save yourself!: The bad

Rude indeed.

Now that’s another nitpick festival for me, seen how much I love Save yourself! # 1. I guess the cliffhanger at the end of the entire “Secret Base at the Bottom of the Atlantic” reveal (along with the other revelations) annoyed me a little. However, said cliffhanger wasn’t as bad as it could have been. It left me eager to find out what would happen in the next issue instead of dying to find out what would happen next.
