A seismic shift to the Valiant Universe is coming. At the same time next week, Jack Boniface will be back after a brief hiatus in the pages of Shadow Man # 5. Horror Brain Cullen Bunn returns in the series with artist Pedro Andreo (Bloodshot), and ComicBook.com has the scoop on not only what fans can expect from the return of Valiant’s flagship horror hero, but the Deadside War arc, the first such Valiant event of the year.
As Bunn tells us, this war – between the kingdom we inhabit, humans, and the Deadside, where the souls of the departed reign – was something he wanted to tell since he started writing the first issue.
“The way the story will be told has changed along the way,” Bunn said. “There has been a lot of talk about how best to make everything go. I think readers will appreciate what happens here, but the delivery is something that even took me by surprise. story, I’m doing very different things from things with this book, especially numbers 7 and 8. You’ll see what I mean when those numbers come in. So, yeah, an ending, and pretty much what I mean. I expected, but also the start of very big things. “
As we saw in the last moments of Shadow Man # 4 of Bunn and Jon Davis-Hunt, it is revealed that Boniface aims to combine Deadside and Earth into one realm, as he believes everyone involved can live in harmony. Bunn adds that this may not be the hero’s best choice, but one of the only options for the problem at hand.
“I’ve discovered in recent years that when desperate times strike, sometimes wild plans surface. Sometimes those plans become the ‘only option’ very quickly,” says the writer. “We’re throwing everything we have at them. We convince ourselves that we are doing the only thing that could be right. And sometimes we fall in the face. gravel on our faces and try again. If we’re lucky, something from our failed plan might shed light on a more successful follow-up. “
As for Valiant fans who are hoping this is a real event, Bunn adds that there will be some big surprises in store. Not only will the Abettors, Alyssa, and Punk Mambo return to aid the eponymous anti-hero in the Deadside War, but many more will inevitably appear.
ComicBook.com got an advanced preview of Shadow Man # 5, and we think Andreo’s line art is an outstanding match for the ongoing story. In fact, the artist tells us that the editors he worked with at Valiant encouraged him to push the pedal to the limit and go full steam ahead. “This is just the start,” warns Andrea. “Wait until you see the next issues! “
As well as catching up with all of the previous Shadowman comics, Andreo says that he and Bunn talked at length about certain types of horror they wanted to tell in this arc.
“Cullen has been a huge support from the start and he’s always very clear with the credentials and the visual horror that he wants me to portray and that’s been helpful,” adds Andreo. “We haven’t had any marathons, because I’m a scary cat when it comes to horror
movies! [laughs] I can’t stand them. But there are certainly nods to the comics, movies, and other horror stuff in Shadow Man! “
Shadow Man # 5 hits the shelves at your local comic book store on Wednesday, January 19.
