The corner of Cambell and East North streets is being transformed into a hub for consumers who need quick and convenient car maintenance.

K&M Development, a project management division of Quest Development & Construction in Aberdeen, has purchased land in the old Kmart parking lot. Plans are to start this winter or early spring on a building that will house two franchises – Take 5 Oil Change and RNR Tire Express.

Take 5 Oil Change is known for its 10 minute oil change service which is performed while customers are staying in their vehicles.

“It’s a convenience-driven business and we provide clients with the best possible care and help them get through the rest of their day,” said Max Pfeiffer, president of K&M Development.

RNR Tire Express will bring a new concept to the region: tire and wheel rental.

“It’s the largest tire, wheel, and option-to-buy lease concept in the country. They know how to build relationships with their customers and how to market. There is nothing like it in the region when it comes to a franchise, ”Pfeiffer said.

The new franchises will be located near Tidal Wave Auto Spa, which opened in June.

“It’s a great place with great visibility. With the revitalization of this mall, we love the synergy. There are a lot of drivers there. This wedge fits the needs of both companies very well, ”said Pfeiffer. “The car wash has a nice symmetry for us. This is definitely an added bonus.

Pfeiffer said the Take 5 Oil Change and RNR Tire Express companies would create around 20 jobs. He anticipates that job postings will be posted within the next 30 to 45 days. Pfeiffer hopes the businesses will open between April 1 and June 1.

“We are finalizing our plans right now,” he said. “I would like to open in April and sort out the issues before Rapid City really starts to explode with tourists. We’re really excited to be in Rapid City.

Expansion into auto franchises is new to K&M Development, a company formed to develop, own and operate hotels. Pfeiffer and his business partner, Kevin Weisbeck, have over 30 years of experience in hotel management and operations.

“We decided before COVID-19 that we were looking to branch out,” Pfeiffer said. “We started looking for other franchises and they landed in the auto industry. When it comes to how we develop and manage remotely, business plans are a good match for what we do.

A local manager will be hired to oversee day-to-day operations, he said, while K&M will take care of “overall operations.” K&M Development is also building franchises in Sioux Falls and Bismarck, Fargo and Grand Forks, ND

The property that once housed Kmart, a mall and other businesses is being renovated and developed by Dream Design International into a 185,000 square foot shopping complex, Dakota Market Square. In addition to Take 5 Oil Change and RNR Tire Express, several other companies are expected to open in Dakota Market Square in 2022.

Dream Design International announced last week on its Facebook page that it expects more businesses to open in January and February in a new 10,000-square-foot mall along East North Street. Businesses will include a nail salon, cafe, professional office, vape, and restaurant.
